We represent the Illinois Chapter of the Huntington's Disease Society of America, serving the state of Illinois.  We give voice to those fighting the battle to find a treatment or cure for this devastating disease.  We advocate for and  represent families that are affected by Huntington's Disease.

The Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA) is dedicated to finding a cure for Huntington's Disease (HD) while providing support and services for those living with HD and their families. HDSA promotes and supports both clinical and basic HD research, aids families in coping with the multi-faceted problems presented by HD and educates the families, the public and health care professionals about Huntington's Disease. Our HD families give a face to Huntington's Disease. HDSA is its voice.

It is our mission to fund research for finding a treatment or cure, provide family care, promote HD awareness, provide public education, and support patient advocacy for all families who suffer with Huntington's Disease.

The American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP), a national charity supervisory service that assists donors in making well informed giving decisions, has designated HDSA as one of the top rated charitable organizations. Ranked with large health organizations, such as the American Heart Association, and the American Liver Foundation, HDSA was the only health organization to receive an A+ grade. If you would like to find out more about AIP, and their grading system, you may log onto www.charitywatch.org.

The battle to fight Huntington's Disease as a group effort was begun in 1967 by Marjorie Guthrie, wife of America's best known folk singer and writer, Woody Guthrie.  After Woody's death from Huntington's Disease, Marjorie began the organization that has become The Huntington's Disease Society of America.  Her "grass roots" style of fighting for a treatment or cure, for advocating for patient's rights, for proper care for those who have tested positive for the defective gene, continues today!  The Illinois Chapter (originally the Chicago Chapter) was founded in 1973.

The Illinois Chapter of the Huntington's Disease Society of America has continuously been a Charter Member of HDSA since 1973.  We are a group of dedicated volunteers who have more than just a passing interest in HD.  We are passionate about the battle to find a treatment or cure so that this IS the last generation to know Huntington's Disease.  With YOUR help, we WILL succeed!
